General Education and Training Phase

 

The aim of the subjects offered in grade 8 and 9 is to lay a broad foundation that will assist

students in making an informed choice of subjects in Grade 10.

Description
Home Language All learners are required to do English as a Home Language. The aim is develop effective communication skills, both written and oral communication.
Additional Language Learners choose between either IsiZulu or Afrikaans as an additional language. South Africa is a multilingual country which requires leaners to be able to communicate in more than one language.
Mathematics Mathematics involves observing, representing and investigating patterns and quantitative relationships in physical and social phenomena and between mathematical objects. Mathematical symbols and notation form a specialised language. Leaners are encouraged to develop an appreciation of mathematical relationships. Grade 8 and 9 form a foundation for both Maths Core and Maths Literacy in the FET phase.
Natural Sciences Science has been shaped by the search to understand the natural world through observation, codifying and testing ideas. The aim of Natural Sciences is to develop a desire to investigate and discover the world around us .
Social Sciences Relationships between people, and between people and the environment, are studied as they vary over time and place. Social Sciences is a combination of History and Geograph.
Economic and Management Sciences Learners study private, public or collective use of resources in satisfying needs and wants, with the impact of exploiting resources. Learners are equiped with a basic knowledge of business principles and function.
Technology People have used knowledge, skills and available resources to develop products or systems to meet our needs and wants. The aim of technology is to create an understanding of the relationships between technology, society and the environment.
Arts and Culture Learners develop their potential in drama, visual arts, dance, and music. Creative expression and communication are core aims of the Arts and Culture classes.
Life Orientation Learners are guided and prepared for life and its possibilities.


Critical outcomes of the Curriculum

Each learning area aims to develop the following skills in each learner:

1. Identify and solve problems and make decisions using critical and creative thinking.

2. Work effectively with others as members of a team.

3. Organise and manage themselves and their activities in a responsible and effective way.

4. Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information.

5. Communicate effectively using visual, symbolic and/or language skills in various modes.

6. Use science and technology effectively and critically showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others.

7. Demonstrate an understanding of the worls as a set of related systems.
